8. October, 2021Weekly Buzz

I’m reminded today of the phrase, “You had one job to do…,” but we all know better.  We each have many jobs to do, and sometimes we all have the same job to do, such as when the school, church, and parents join together to educate our children.  The goal is to nurture them, teach them, and at some point send them on their own way, which in our case is when they graduate 8th grade and become alumni.  With that in mind, today I want to focus a little bit on our alumni.

We’ve had thousands of students graduate from Saint Bernadette School since the first commencement in 1951.  Some are names you still recognize locally such as the Magnolia family with their plumbing and heating business prolific in our region, or the Coakleys of real estate fame, or NCAA lacrosse champion Caileigh Sindall, or WJLA meteorologist Eileen Whelan.  Some are your neighbors or current Saint Bernadette School parents guiding the next generation through our halls.  They all share that bond which I will never have (but my children do!) of being one of our alumni, and if you ever have a chance to visit with a few of them, you will see that bond is strong.  It’s what makes guys 15 years past graduation come back regularly for pick-up games or makes parents of alumni keep showing up for Friday Nights on the Field.  It’s what makes our Classes of 1970 and 1971 band together to plan a joint 50th reunion for next week.   It’s what I hope will bring your children and you back for many years after they graduate.

Volunteer to help with Echo Dinner

Last year I had the privilege of speaking to one of our alumni from that first graduating Class of 1951, and she informed me that she still keeps in touch with many of her classmates, which didn’t surprise me.  In 2019, the Fund-a-Scholar program was launched by a group of alumni from the Class of 1962 with such strong bonds holding them together that they felt an obligation to help more present-day students enjoy the same experiences they had, so they started a scholarship program and we created the ECHO Dinner as a way to promote their commitment and give all alumni an excuse for another homecoming!  While we were not able to host that dinner last year, it will return next month, and I hope some of you can volunteer to help us make this a special night for many alums.  This year we will be honoring our alumni who have dedicated their lives to frontline service in healthcare, law enforcement, and the military, so if you know of any graduate who fits, please pass their name along to Meg Lewis, our development director by email at mlewis@saintbernadetteschool.org.  I’m looking forward to a month of fun homecomings!

Greater Love Coat Drive

The first monthly tag day to support the St. Camillus Food Pantry raised over $400!  Thank you to all the students for their generosity. Although an email was sent earlier this week detailing Greater Love initiatives for the year, I want to remind everyone that the Coat Drive began today and will run for two weeks.  Thank you for your continued support of all their efforts and for modeling compassion to the students.

No School on Monday 10/11

Like you, I didn’t just have one job to do today, but writing the Buzz is now complete, so I can move on to the next task.  Please remember that we have NO SCHOOL on Monday. I hope you have a wonderful weekend and if I don’t catch you on the field tonight or at mass over the weekend I’ll see you back here on Tuesday!

In His service,

Mr. Ewanciw

Answering the Call and Getting Credit!

The HSA needs you to volunteer now:

1. HSA Table at Fall Festival (1 tier)- Sunday, October 24, show the community why you love SBS!  We are in need of 1-2 additional volunteers to man the HSA information table during the Fall Festival.  You will meet and greet attendees throughout the event and share fun experiences you have had being a part of this community.

2. Bingo Chair (2 tiers)- This is a great event for the entire family!  We will be planning a Bingo night in January of 2022- may sound far away but will be here before you know it.  Don’t worry — this has been a favorite event for years so previous chairs are available for guidance.

3.  Winter Parent Social Chairs (2 tiers)– 2 spots available.  Help plan a fun night out for the parents- close to home- in the school hall.  This was a favorite back in the day, and we look forward to bringing it back.

4.  Sneaker Drive Chair (2 tiers)– 2 spots available.  This is a new fundraiser for us.  Help us make it a great one and start a new tradition.  Email Meg Lewis for more information.  mlewis@saintbernadetteschool.org
