Glossary Words: sediment – small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things erosion – running water, wind, or ice loosen and carry away rock fragments, soil and other debris (leaves, etc.) weathering – the process that breaks down rock and other substances at Earth’s surface. Run-off – water, from rain, snowmelt, or other sources, that flows over the land surface Compaction – the squeezing of layers of sediment together caused by newer layers pressed down by older layers (over millions of years) Cementation – when dissolved minerals in the water form crystals and “glue” the sediment particles together; this creates sedimentary rock |
