Glossary Words:

sediment – small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things

erosion – running water, wind, or ice loosen and carry away rock fragments, soil and other debris (leaves, etc.)

weathering – the process that breaks down rock and other substances at Earth’s surface.

Run-off – water, from rain, snowmelt, or other sources, that flows over the land surface

Compaction the squeezing of layers of sediment together caused by newer layers pressed down by older layers (over millions of years)

Cementation – when dissolved minerals in the water form crystals and “glue” the sediment particles together; this creates sedimentary rock
