Covalent Bonding Practice:

Draw an electron-dot diagram for each atom and then show the bonding of the atoms to form a molecular compound. Write the chemical formula for the compound.

A.hydrogen and chlorine

B.hydrogen and carbon

C.chlorine and chlorine

Copy notes:

General characteristics of molecular compounds:

  • Lower melting and boiling points than ionic compounds

oForces between molecules of molecular compounds in a solid state are weaker than the forces between ions in a solid state.

Øthis is why many molecular compounds are liquids or gases at room temperature (ex. water, gasoline)

  • Poor conductivity:

omost do not conduct electric current

oAre used as insulators (rubber, plastic)
