A Message from the Maryland Department of Health

All students must meet Maryland state immunization requirements in order to attend school. An immunization record and health inventory form should be on file in the school health room for your child. If you have not already provided your school nurse with your child’s immunization & health records, please do so immediately. Students who do not have an updated immunization record on file are out of compliance with Maryland state law and will be excluded until completed.

A Message from the School Nurse

The Maryland Department of Health warns that flu and certain respiratory illnesses such as Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) are on the rise this winter. RSV spreads quickly at school and childcare. Protect yourself and your family by doing the following to reduce the spread of illnesses both at home and at school:

  • Get a flu shot and a COVID-19 booster for all eligible family members.

  • Teach children to wash their hands often and to cover coughs & sneezes with their upper sleeve or tissue, never a hand.

  • Clean doorknobs, toys, handheld electronic devices and other high touch objects frequently.

  • Consider wearing a mask when sick and always keep sick children home!

HSAdvent is Tomorrow!

HSAdvent will be held on Saturday, December 3rd from 12-5pm and is a newer event to the SBS community. The HSAdvent brings live music from alumni band, “The Edge,” food trucks, local vendors and parent owned Urban Winery to the front lawn and inside the school hall. HSAdvent is a chance to gather with the community to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season, and it coincides with the CYO Christmas Tree sales in front of the church. Bring the whole family to picnic and play “reindeer games” on the front lawn and get in the holiday spirit with some good drinks, good food, and good cheer.

As is the case with so many of the events in our community, this festival will not be possible without the help of many generous volunteers. Please click here to review the available slots and sign up for 1 tier credit. (Direct link to the volunteer sign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e4baba629a3fece9-hsadvent.) Thank you!

Are You Overrun with Sneakers?

Cleaning out your closets this weekend? Please consider dropping off your old sneakers at the SBS HSA Got Sneakers Fundraiser!  We are a Sneaker Recycling Partner of Got Sneakers. Each year, millions of sneakers end up in a landfill. Our community can help by recycling with this program. As a bonus for our sustainable efforts, Got Sneakers will pay us for each qualifying pair of sneakers their team receives! The funds received will be put towards HSA Hospitality efforts to continue to host wonderful community events and enhance our meaningful appreciation events and gifts for our dedicated teachers and staff. There will be a Sneaker Recycling bin at HSAdvent this Saturday, December 3. We will announce more dates throughout the school year. For any questions, contact Meg Lewis at (301)467-5621.

What’s in Store?

It’s that time of year again! We are excited to bring back a special tradition to Saint Bernadette School: The Christmas Store! The Christmas Store is a pop-up store for students to pick out presents for their loved ones. We are planning to have the store up and running on Monday, December 12th.

We will need your help to make the store a success so be sure to take a look at the email sent out by the HSA for information on how to donate items. Please feel free to reach out to Justine Fortkiewicz   justine.marieva@gmail.com or Kristie Weatherby kweatherby@saintbernadetteschool.org with any questions.

Social Justice through our No Place for Hate Committee

As Catholics, we are called by God to reach out and build relationships of love and justice. This is taught to us by Jesus Christ, who served and identified himself with the poor, the injured, and the marginalized in our world. One way our school works to promote social justice is through the ADL’s No Place for Hate program. The goal of the No Place for Hate program is to promote an understanding of the value and dignity of all members of our school community as well as encourage work towards greater justice and respect for those in our surrounding community. In the coming months, each classroom will be signing the No Place for Hate pledge. We will also be looking for parent and student volunteers who would like to help with No Place for Hate events and the committee. If you or your child are interested in serving on our No Place for Hate Committee, please fill out the following Google Form: https://forms.gle/onWEtasuhy717Kpq7

To learn more about  No Place for Hate® at Saint Bernadette Catholic School please contact Margaret Rodriguez at mrodriguez@saintbernadetteschool.org. With your help, we will continue to strive to walk in the example of Jesus Christ, to profess love for others, and to make our school community a safe and welcoming space for all.
