Fund a Scholar

Dear Saint Bernadette School Alumni,

On behalf of our school, I hope you enjoy a wonderful summer. As you know, the past school year was unlike any other but our Saint Bernadette School community thrived despite many challenges. We were able to maintain a solid enrollment while providing both in-person and distance instruction all year long to meet each family’s specific needs!

From the students logging in at home to those in the classroom, from the teachers who handled multiple modes of instruction to the parents who kept their families and our school healthy and safe, from the nu

rse to the priests, and from all the staff to those unnamed standing behind each of us to give support all year, we are grateful for the commitments of each one of our school heroes that showcased our school each day.  While this year came with unending challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we stayed true to our mission to provide a safe, secure and positive atmosphere for our students. The school remained open all year and had no cases of Covid transmission among students or staff!

We also were able to extend this safe, secure, and studious atmosphere to many students who would not normally have access to the Saint Bernadette Catholic School education.  In addition to many families who came to us for in-person instruction the past year and decided to stay for the long haul, so many more of our students are benefiting from this education thanks to the generosity of our community.  The rising costs of providing this education cover highly qualified faculty and staff and also included the additional thousands of dollars of personal protection equipment and extra cleaning and sanitation costs to combat Covid.  Tuition is nearing $10,000 per child yet that still leaves a shortfall that is made up through parish support and fundraising.

Last year, 45% of our students received over $200,000 from all sources of support to sustain their Catholic school education.  Archdiocesan aid fell for these 117 students so the parish increased its support to pick up the slack, even though the pandemic also has impacted the church’s offertory.  School fundraising was limited further because the Gala and Echo dinners also were canceled, but the support of the school families, the community and our alumni helped make ends meet!

The Saint Bernadette School “Fund-a-Scholar” appeal is an alumni-driven program where alumni and friends of the school can make a contribution to help provide additional need-based tuition assistance, beyond current financial aid sources.  Launched in 2019 by the Class of 1962, nearly 100 families have been helped by this fund to date.

With much of summer behind us now, our students are getting ready to return to school at the end of this month, and with increased enrollment, the need also will rise.  We hope you fondly remember your past summers as you recall what Saint Bernadette School meant to your own success in life, and that you can contribute to help bring a similar opportunity to a deserving young scholar.

Plans are underway for our second Echo Dinner in November to serve as a reunion for our classes of 1951, 1961, 1971, 1981, 2001, and 2011.  Please consider joining our Honor Roll of Alumni by donating as little as one dollar for each year since you left our school.  May God bless you and your family and friends.
